OVERSEAS PANEL PRODUCERS SEEK BIS STANDARD CERTIFICATION

Recently BIS has issued mandatory quality control orders for plywood, block board, doors, MDF, particle board, shuttering ply etc. and advised the industry players to prepare to get BIS compatible whether it is domestic producers or import based material suppliers. The Government order has alerted overseas producers of MDF and Plywood, who export materials to the India market, and everyone has been evaluating and talking to India’s customers for their future plan. BIS order is mandatory in these categories, and the timeline has been 6 to 12 months, which means it is clear that the producers have to have a BIS standard mark.

The sources from BIS confirm that the overseas panel producing companies are approaching the BIS office for getting the certification as per IS Standard. There are many queries from them being reported where they wanted to know the producer “how to get the certification and what are the costs for taking the BIS standard.”

As per report it is noted that MDF is being imported to India from Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, etc. Similarly, plywood is being imported from Russia, Vietnam, Nepal, Indonesia, Malaysia, China etc. Particle Board is also being imported from Malaysia, Thailand, China, Vietnam, etc. After the notification of mandatory IS for these products the importers are insisting on supplying overseas companies to obtain the BIS standard by which the company can increase their business into India

As per BIS notification, the Central Government, after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards, is of the opinion that it is necessary or expedient to do so in the public interest that Compulsory use of the Standard Mark. Hereby it has made the order, and the order may be called the Wood-Based Boards (Quality Control) Order, 2023.

It shall come into force on expiry of six months from the date of publication of the notification. Provided that in relation to micro and small enterprises, it shall come into force on the expiry of twelve months from the date of publication of the notification. Besides, nothing in this Order shall apply to goods or articles manufactured domestically for export. After the time frame of 6 months, 9 months and 12 months for big, medium and small & micro industries the BIS standard will be mandatory for them.
