QCO-BIS on Telescopic Ball Bearing Drawer Slides to be enforced by 01 November 2024
The Government of India has issued a new order aimed at ensuring the quality of telescopic ball bearing drawer slides used in various industries. The Telescopic Ball Bearing Drawer Slide (Quality Control) Order, 2024, was published in the Official Gazette on May 2, 2024, and comes into effect six months from the date of publication. The order is designed to regulate the production and use of these slides, which are crucial components in various applications, including furniture, machinery, and other equipment. The order requires that all goods or articles specified in the table below conform to the corresponding Indian Standard and bear the Standard Mark under a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

The order also specifies that the Bureau of Indian Standards will be the certifying and enforcing authority for these goods or articles. Additionally, any person who contravenes the provisions of this order shall be punishable under the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. The order provides for certain exemptions, including for goods or articles manufactured domestically for export and for micro, small, and medium enterprises. The introduction of this order is expected to improve the quality and safety of telescopic ball bearing drawer slides in India, enhancing the overall performance and reliability of the products that use them.
BIS on Hinges to be enforced by June 8th
In a move to ensure the quality of hinges in India, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has issued an order making it compulsory for certain types of hinges to conform to specific Indian Standards. The order, titled “Hinges (Quality Control) Order, 2023,” was published in the Gazette of India on December 12, 2023.
The order stipulates that goods or articles specified in the Table below shall conform to the corresponding Indian Standard mentioned in column (2) of the Table and shall bear the Standard Mark under a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards as per Scheme-1 of Schedule-II to the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.
The order does not apply to goods or articles manufactured domestically for export. Additionally, micro and small enterprises, as defined in the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, have been given a longer timeframe to comply with the order. Micro enterprises have been exempted from the order for 12 months, while small enterprises have been exempted for 9 months from the date of publication of the notification.
The Bureau of Indian Standards will be the certifying and enforcing authority for the goods or articles specified in the Table[1]
The order affects a range of hinges, including stainless steel butt hinges, steel butt hinges, non-ferrous metal butt hinges, tee and strap hinges, parliament hinges, continuous (piano) hinges, steel back flap hinges, double-acting spring hinges, and cabinet hinges. Mr. Saransh Choudhary, Director of Surya Plast, Manufacturer of Telescopic Drawer and Hinges welcome the decision of taken by Government and said that it will support domestic producers and discourage cheap import of these products in India.
