Suitable Resin is the Need of the Hour for Plywood & Panel Industry

Wednesday, 17 September 2025

Of late, Ply Reporter has observed many news from industry regarding the development of Bio resin or Urea free resin, which is indeed a commendable initiative but the challenges lies in the production of such resin at a large scale to cater the need of the vast panel industry.

With growing demand and capacity of plywood and panel products, the need for suitable resin has become more pronounced in order to make quality plywood, MDF, doors, block boards. As panel products are the chief materials used in the manufacturing of furniture, which itself has become the fourth basic need of people, therefore the time is apt to derive the right formula for the strong bonding of each wood panel so that the end product turns out to be acceptable in terms of quality, environment friendliness and durability.

The Govt has taken strict measures to curb the use of agricultural grade Urea for industrial purposes by making a law on the use of only technical grade Urea in the industries. So industry is under obligation to use only tech grade urea for resin manufacturing but there is a challenge of procuring it from the various resources as there are no certain places to obtain it, besides that its high import cost further accentuate the challenges in the availability. The government has ordered to issue non-bailable offence against anyone caught using agricultural grade urea in the industry. Over the last two years, industry has been encountering multiple raids on plywood, MDF and PB manufacturing facilities using urea for resin manufacturing.

Such circumstances present an opportunity for technocrats, researchers and scientists to devise the right formula for resin manufacturing. Of late, Ply reporter has observed many news from industry regarding the development of Bio resin or Urea free resin, which is indeed a commendable initiative but the challenges lies in the production of such resin at such a large scale to cater the need of the vast panel industry. Producers have yet to figure out the mechanism of its production at large scale which would also present a cost effective, sustainable and robust alternative to the industry. The plywood industry should also seek the support of govt in the procurement of technical grade urea in adequate quantities. Govt should also find the provisions to subsidise the technical grade urea in the interest of industry because the wood panel sector is an agro- based industry which provides income to a great number of farmers across the country.
