The environmental issues are very important in global scenario and therefore an understanding of promising new eco-friendly technologies and their adoption will help industries to ensure longer sustainability. In this context, IPIRTI one of the pioneer research institute has developed technologies which are environmentally responsive, cost effective and socially acceptable ones.
To disseminate the R&D work among the industries in eastern and northeastern belt of India, Indian Plywood Industries Research and Training Institute, Kolkata organized IPIRTI - INDUSTRY MEET on 12th October, 2018 at IPIRTI, Field Station Kolkata. The meet was inaugurated and welcomed by Dr. B. N. Mohanty, IFS, Director, IPIRTI to all the dignitaries, members and invited guests. He expressed his immense pleasure to have this kind of interactive meet. More than 50 delegates from industries based in eastern region attended the interactive session. The main objective of the meet was to quick disseminate the new technologies for the benefit of the industry as one of the regular features of this institute which will provide valuable opportunities for plywood manufacturers and consumers to exchange facts, views and challenges for trade and technological development.
Dr. B.N. Mohanty informed that the IPIRTI-Industry meet provides an opportunity for the industries to express their views and problems which help IPIRTI to prioritize future research strategies for the promotion and development of wood and panel industries. He also mentioned about the service of the institute to cater the technological needs of the industries and also IPIRTI’s effort to help other issues facing the plywood. Mentioning about the efforts being made to meet wood demand by sourcing timber from plantation and trees outside forest especially species like Eucalyptus and Poplar which have made great strides in North India states and Meliadubia as plywood species is being promoted in South India.
Different themes were chosen for the interactive session which includes:
- Development of non-toxic adhesives for production of plywood
- Energy efficient and reduced effluent based production process
- Enhanced service life for panel materials made out of plantation grown timbers
- Cost effective and environment friendly technology
- Bamboo based housing system
- Enhancement of service life of panel products by eco - friendly preservatives
- Minimizing formaldehyde emission level in composite products
- Fire Retardant door and plywood
Scientists of IPIRTI Field Station Kolkata made brief presentations on Research and Development works carried out at IPIRTI on different theme of the interactive meet on the following topics:
(a) Different types of Bamboo Based Housing System by Shri Amitava. Sil, Scientist- D
(b) Modified Urea Formaldehyde (UF/PMDI) resin with PMDI for manufacture of plywood by Shri S. C. Sahoo, Sct- D
(c) Karanj Seed Extractive as eco-friendly Wood Preservation for wood based Panel Industry by Mrs. RiyaTuduSolanki, Sct-C
(d) Development of Fire Retardant wood based Panel Product Technology by Dr. Kuna China Varadarajulu, Sct- C
The scientists highlighted the technological innovations of IPIRTI. The detailed technological input, the economy of adopting these technologies and also its impact on environment were presented to the members. The industries appreciated the work and opined that these technologies should be demonstrated to industries for commercializationand training to be provided to the industries people. The scientists informed that the technology is ready for transfer and if any industry is interested, immediately it would be demonstrated or the technology package will be provided. After the technical presentation, industrial presentation given by Shri Chandrakant Deo, Properitor, M/s Wood Cure Enterprize, West Bengal on “Wood Protector Scapo as wood preservative.”
The session was ended with vote of thanks to the Chair and all other participants by Mrs Riya Tudu Solanki, Scientist, IPIRTI, Kolkata.
