The calibrated panel processing goes well with CNC machines and better surface finish hence without calibration, plywood cannot grow further. The survey also hints that the consumption of plywood share in OEMs, Kitchen Makers and Big Contractors ( having business turnover of above Rs 5 crore annually) have increased by 25 to 30 % among all panel requirements.
The producers and importers of different panel products e.g. MDF, PB, WPC / PVC Boards, Cement Fibre Boards, etc have tried to present these as alternates of plywood. These products are being marketed as better substitutes of plywood with many advantages over plywood. These alternate panels have been successfully reaching among users due to being economic and additional features, hence expanding their production capacities. But, the fact is, Plywood market size still holds its firm grip and is maintaining its share, charm and attraction because of its dependability and ease of working, which is not yet matched by any product so far.
Surprisingly in this growth period of other products, the plywood production capacity also doubled with many new factories, new machines in Punjab, Haryana, Kerala and other states. In terms of profitability for dealers, Plywood is a winner among all panels which makes it a consistently much growing product in India. Many people believe that, Plywood is a first choice for consumers also because available alternate panels do not meet few mechanical & physical properties that provide the strength and durability. Carpenters / Contractors and designers prefer plywood because it is most credible product in terms of workmanship and mechanical features.
But with changing uses and application, plywood too need to be upgraded. In present scenario and available technology, plywood shall stay for another longer time period if it becomes a calibrated panel. Ply Reporter and Big Sea Market Research recent surveys show the rising applications and demand among OEMs and Modular Kitchen Makers where they require only 'calibrated plywood'.
Presently the calibrated plywood is imported from Russia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and China. Although 25 - 30 Indian plywood producers claim to have genuine calibrated plywood but accept half a dozen brands, there is need of development further. With growing need, calibration will become essential feature for plywood making in another 2 - 3 years. The Ply Reporter strongly recommends to produce genuine quality and all calibrated plywood for emerging markets. The interaction with OEMs for the need of Calibrated Plywood and their expectation from 'Wigwam Fabricate' plywood is interesting report for trade people.
