Greenply Industries Ltd. has started the Green-Rise project from its Tijit plant in Nagaland. The plantation is being done in the name of an architect associated with the wood panel industry under this project. With the help of it, the company is promoting the environment adopting the FSC forest management model along with making the society self-reliant.” The Ply Reporter correspondent recently visited Greenply Industries plant located in Tijit, Nagaland and got much useful information from which every plywood industry can learn.
Talking to The Ply Reporter, Mr Amit Kumar, Commercial Head, Greenply said that in the first phase, 210 saplings have been planted in the name of architects from Odisha. After that the architect based in the states of Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand and MP would be considered. He told that under this model, each tree has a barcode, which contains the name of the architect, his address, date and time of plantation along with the name of the species of the tree, and also the contact number. These plants will take 7 to 8 years to get ready and when it will be cut, the earned money will be donated to a needy organization or school in the name of the planter architects.
At present, an area of about 3 acres has been earmarked under this mission, in which about 1400 plants will be planted. General Manager of Tijit Plant Mr. AK Dubey said that the company has started this mission with the cooperation of the state government and local people. They are showing great interest. Most importantly with the project the company is educating people about the availability of plants as well as the method of planting trees.
He told that at present around 70 farmers have got registered under FSC, apart from this, there are more than 100 such farmers and private land owners who are associated with the company's forest management programme. Mr. Dubey says that this mission, which was started in the year 2014 from about 600 acres of land, has currently spread to 3400 acres, in which around 16 lakh plants have been planted.
Company official informs that around 455 saplings are planted in one acre. One tree produces 12 to 15 cubic feet (bft) of stem, whose girth is around 80 mm to 100 cm. 1 CFT produces about 16 square meters of 1.8 mm thick veneer, while the cost of 1 CFT stem ranges from Rs 250 to Rs 400, which means a farmer earns Rs 3000 to Rs 6000 per tree.
According to them, in the year 2022, 2023, 8 to 9 lakh CFT stem was available to the company, while in the year 2023-24, around 12 lakh CFT stem is expected to be available, which will be surplus for the company's Tijit plant. He adds that the company has prepared its own nursery. Saplings of Safeda, Millia Dubia, Duabanga (Khokhan), Canarium and Terminalia species are prepared in this nursery
