The Indian market is slowly changing for MDF producers from commodity to value added products. Earlier when HD+WR material was not so popular in India, MDF was known to be a substrate material, largely used in panelling, fit outs and surfacing needs. The material was also demanded in multiple uses including photo frames, gift boxes, show heals and various packaging forms. But after HD+WR acceptance, the trend is catching up with pre laminated boards direct application in cabinetries as well as kitchens.
The low rise builders floors that are very popular in Northern belts, the application of pre-lam MDF boards have become quite pre dominant. The built in walls wardrobes are being directly fixed with Pre lab HD+MR boards where wood cost is below Rs 130 plus carpentry cost. In case of plywood-laminate combo the cost of the same built in cabinet crosses Rs 230 psf for the panel measuring. The difference of around 80% is a major cost factor, coming in way where builders are offering a ready floor.
The Pre-laminated MDF demand which was hardly 8 to 10% of thick boards share a few years ago, is now reaching to 18-20%. Since the MDF density/board quality has been trust worthy so far, the demands are growing.
Although market is certainly showing discomfort where, look alike HD+MR boards are being sold specially in metros which will dent the image after a certain period when product will begin to fail due to poor quality. The rise in pre-lam MDF is also a challenge for economical grade laminate makers as this will hit the liner demand in years to come.
